Storing fragile items such as glass, porcelain, antiques, and heirlooms, as well as delicate goods such as textiles can be tricky.

Taking special care of these items is essential when packing or moving. In this article, we explain what you’ll need and how you can prevent your fragile or breakable goods from getting damaged while they’re boxed away.

Fragile Items: Decluttering and Packing

It is important to preserve the value and quality of fragile items when packing and storing them. This can only be accomplished by storing breakables and fragile items properly.

It’s not enough to wrap them in tissue paper and pack them in boxes. Having a self storage unit can be very helpful if you need to store these types of items properly. How do you get started?

When Storing Fragile Items, What Do I Need?

To begin, take stock of breakables that require special care and packaging. Prepare all the supplies you may need, including the following:

  • Bins made of quality plastic, ideally stackable
  • Bubble wrap
  • Packing tape and packing paper
  • Scissors or packing knife
  • Black marker or labels to list the contents of each box for easy access later
  • Fragile or breakable stickers
  • Box dividers

Preparing your supplies ahead of time is always a good idea. Packing and storing fragile items will be easier if you follow this advice.

The Best Way To Pack Fragile Items

Keep breakables and fragile items clean, stored, and transported using the right techniques to extend their lifespan. Carefully handling fragile and delicate items not only saves you time, but also helps your budget since replacing broken items can be expensive.

Store fragile items in lined boxes to add extra protection

Be sure to clean fragile items first and treat them if necessary before packing them. Packing paper or bubble wrap, or both, should be used to wrap each item individually. Additionally, lining your boxes will provide additional protection and cushioning. Should something happen and your items move around in the box during transport or packing, this will help limit damage to your items.

Boxes should not be overfilled and dividers should be used

You should leave sufficient space between fragile items such as antiques, collectibles, and breakables. It is also important not to overfill the boxes as they may be too heavy to carry and more likely to be damaged if overfilled.

Add dividers between delicate or fragile items to give them extra space between them. Include a soft, felt divider or something similar in each box, and only put a few items in each one. Keeping items separated and in place will be easier when moving boxes.

Glassware Packing And Preparation

You should crumple together enough newspaper or packing paper to cover the bottom of the box when storing fragile items, such as glassware. The extra cushioning will protect the bottom of the glasses from being damaged. You can also use towels or sheets but be sure the layer at the bottom is thick enough to protect the contents.

  • The biggest, heaviest glasses should be wrapped and packed first
  • Lighter glasses should be packed on top
  • Ensure that the box is packed on a flat, clean surface
  • Put one glass or mug in the corner of one piece of paper or towel at an angle
  • Roll the glassware and stuff the paper or towel ends into the opening as you go
  • Continue wrapping until the glass is fully covered
  • Check Before Sealing The Box

Packing things well at the beginning will make unpacking everything easier later. Make sure to take your time packing and storing fragile items so you don’t end up spending a lot on your move. Don’t rush and make sure everything is wrapped, packed, and stacked properly.
