How to Store Garden Furniture in Winter

garden furniture storage

Most of us have spent more time in our gardens this year but soon we will have to accept the fact that when the weather begins to turn, our gardens are ready for a break.

A final mow of the grass, a final hedge trim to keep everything looking neat, and then you can store your garden furniture to keep it in good condition for next year.

Pushing your garden furniture into the shed might not be the best idea, but you prepare now, you will save yourself time (and money) in the spring.

Wooden garden furniture storage

Before storing your wooden garden furniture, scrub it thoroughly with a stiff brush and hot, soapy water to remove lichen and fungal spores. Ensure it dries properly and oil it before storing it. Lack of adequate air circulation might cause it to rot if it is not dry before going undercover.

Plastic garden furniture storage

If plastic furniture is not kept dry and ventilated properly, it will discolour from mildew. After cleaning your furniture with hot, soapy water (using a soft cloth – nothing abrasive), dry it thoroughly before storing it . Use neat bleach to get it back to its original whiteness (test on a small, inconspicuous area first).

Rattan or wicker garden furniture storage

It can be difficult to clean rattan and wicker garden furniture because of their weave. You can use a vacuum to remove dust before cleaning it with hot, soapy water – a toothbrush can help you get into all the nooks and crannies or spray it with water from a high-pressure hose.

It is recommended to keep wicker garden furniture indoors when not in use. It could be varnished before being stored to extend its life. It is designed to weather the winter months and is more durable than natural rattan.

Storing iron garden furniture

When storing iron garden furniture, rust is the biggest risk. After you’ve cleaned and dried it, check for any blossoming rust spots and remove – you can get rust removal products from any DIY shop, or you can soak the affected area in white vinegar and rub with aluminium foil. Make sure it is completely dry before storing it.

Cleaning and storing fabrics

If your garden seats have soft cushions, it’s best to store them indoors. Allow all soft materials to dry thoroughly before storing them after washing or dabbing them clean.

Alternative storage

It might be a good idea to rent a self-storage unit if you don’t have a secure place to store your garden furniture. All of our units are indoors, protected against pests and the elements, and monitored by CCTV and alarms. In addition, you can store your gardening equipment with us so that everything stays clean and dry until you need it again.

Your garden will look neat and tidy until spring, when the real work begins.
