We all have limited space in our home or office. Paperwork overflowing, old clothing and toys taking up too much room. Below we have listed essential storage hacks to better handle packing away all that clutter more efficiently.
Consider what sizes of packaging you might require. A general rule is that the heavier stuff you are packing, the smaller sized package you should use. So, for documents and important paperwork, you would probably want a smaller box, whilst for light, large items, you could go with larger boxes. If you are packing clothing that you’d prefer not to fold or keep in a regular box, consider obtaining a wardrobe box in which you can hang those fragile items.
Old clothing and even towels can be a great way to protect your fragile items. Bubble wrap is brilliant too but you may be wanting to pack away some old clothing. So why not kill two birds with one stone!
With space limited to start with, you find you have no room for your packing boxes. By creating one area to pack, you can have all the packing equipment such as bubble wrap and tape available. You can also then concentrate your efforts efficiently. The area will not interfere with your general living area, and you can therefore take your time to pack in an effective manner. Preferably, set up your packing area near to where most of what you need to pack is. This will make packing easier for you.
It may seem simple but small packing rules can make life much easier. Think about what is going in each box. Put the heavy stuff at the bottom of the box as well as the light things on top this will make the package more stable and easier to carry. Likewise, a good idea is to ensure that you have actually placed the package the proper way up before loading into the storage unit as this will make moving the items easier.
When you are packing a single room or many, you can label or colour code things to make identification easier. Just putting a note on the box or using stickers will do the trick. However, we generally find a combination of both works best, especially if you keep notes of things packed. Label the box on ALL sides so you can see the labels from any position the box may be in.
Despite our best efforts, it’s quite common to find that once the packing is done, we have more boxes or items to move than we anticipated. You can also keep track of all the different notes and colour labels to keep an accurate inventory. This can be very convenient if you are putting things into storage as it will make retrieval much simpler.
